Our videos explore various components of medical professionalism through interviews and discussions with physicians and health care leaders.

The ABIM Foundation hosted its annual Forum, in a meeting whose virtual format and agenda were heavily influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. For the third consecutive year, the Forum focused on issues of trust. This year’s discussion, BUILDING TRUST & HEALTH EQUITY DURING COVID-19, centered on the severe health equity challenges that the pandemic—and its disproportionate impact on people of color—made starkly visible.

Prior to the ABIMF 2020 Virtual Forum, five health professionals who had been involved in delivering care during the pandemic shared their experiences about trust and health equity.

At the 2019 ABIM Foundation Forum, [Re]Building Trust: A Path Forward, a diverse group of health care leaders came together to discuss for the second year the importance of nurturing trust in health care and both existing and promising strategies and tactics for building trust across a variety of health care relationships.

According to the CDC, one in three Americans have difficulty paying medical bills, and a report from the Institute of Medicine estimates up to $750 billion a report from the IOM estimates up to $750 billion of health care costs can be considered “waste.” Although physicians are routinely being asked to manage expensive resources, traditional medical training offers few opportunities to learn how to deliver the highest quality care at the lowest possible cost.

To help address this gap in medical education, Costs of Care and the ABIM Foundation have launched the Teaching Value and Choosing Wisely Competition to identify the most promising innovations and bright ideas that can be successfully implemented on a larger scale. Three of the competition’s winners discuss their projects in the videos below.

Primary care is the backbone of an accessible, efficient and high-quality health care system. Without a robust primary care workforce, attempts to address the unequal access and spiraling costs that challenge the current system cannot succeed. Yet fewer aspiring physicians are choosing to focus in primary care, citing long and sometimes unpredictable hours, lower payments and frustrating models of practice.

To begin finding solutions to these challenges and revitalize primary care among practitioners, medical students and residents, a team of researchers funded by the ABIM Foundation visited 23 high-performing practices across the U.S. and presented their findings at a conference entitled Primary Care Innovation: Improving the Efficiency and Appeal of Practice: “How Did They Do That?”

The following video vignettes resulting from the conference offer examples of innovations and critical changes from a variety of practices across the country, and explain how they were implemented to improve the quality of care delivered and restore joy to practice.

A key tenet of the Physician Charter is the just distribution of finite resources. This series examines a physician’s obligation as a good steward of health care resources. It also addresses how the current system rewards quantity over quality care and patient satisfaction. Specific topics include:

• Accessibility for ‘comparative effectiveness’ research
• Providing appropriate and necessary care
• Strengthening communication about resources

The “Putting Quality Into Practice” video series emerged as part of a larger project that documented physician engagement in quality improvement projects. Featured in a course focused on the engagement of physicians in quality at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, the series became inspirational in demonstrating the effects of workflow, resource and systems reviews, electronic medical records (EMRs) implementation and other quality improvement efforts on a practice. In the videos, physicians describe their quality improvement process including:

• Motivation and first steps
• Systems, measurement and tools
• External resources
• Barriers and solutions

This video series examines the strengths and failures of existing healthcare systems. Interviewees share personal experiences, both as medical professionals and as patients, that have led them to desire change in the current system.

This video series explores a physician’s contract with individual patients as well as the profession’s obligation to society at-large.

Physicians and health care leaders reflect on the concept of medical professionalism and its importance to health care and patients.

This discussion focuses on ways to impart professional values and behaviors on to residents and medical students. Subjects addressed include:

• Incorporating learning opportunities into training
• Relating medical ethics to a broader scope of medical professionalism
• Ways to equip future physicians with a moral and ethical foundation
